Stupid?

17th December 2023

When trying to understand what it means to be intelligent, I realised that it's easier to identify stupidity than intelligence.

I want this post to record ways in-which a person can be stupid.

Deferrence to rules

Following the rules pedantically can be a way to avoid having to think about things. Or avoid taking responsibility for decisions.

Poor communication

Poor communication can cause you to not know something that everyone else knows, causing you to make unnecessary mistakes.

Not taking responsibility

Some people may be in a position where they don't have to take responsibility for their mistakes, because someone else is cleaning them up. Being oblivious to your mistakes means you won't learn from them.

Over-dependence on computers

I recently realised that I a common route I was cycling was inefficient, because I was just going the way Google maps told me to. Once I thought about it I was easily able to find a better route.

Groupthink

A group can make bad decisions for the sake of reaching a consensus, suppressing dissenting viewpoints.

Conformity

Doing that which is normal or expected rather than tailoring your decisions or behaviour to your circumstances.

Not having the mental-space to do your best work

Our mind does not exist on a seperate dimension, puppeteering our body. It's affected by our environment.

So you won't do your best work if you're distracted or have a poor working environment.

Not paying attention

Maybe your attention is somewhere else.
